A RIM Response to iPhone 4G?

I had time today to watch the unveiling of features in the new Apple iPhone OS 4 (iphone 4G).  As a shareholder of RIM I’m usually keyed into releases from Apple so I can stay updated on developments of what I consider to be the main global competitor to RIM.

I have to be honest that I was a little worried after I watched the presentation from Apple CEO Steve Jobs on the new iPhone wondering immediately what response RIM will mount to the new features and potential of this new phone for both consumer and business use.

The multitasking feature is the one of the best new developments from Apple and allows users to run multiple apps and programs simutaneously while conserving battery life and speed.  The use potential for consumers is obvious but the business uses is something that I think strikes directly at Blackberry users who might want to float on their phones from mail to various documents and back with an impressive ease of use.

Add in video calling, pin encryption for emails and a spell checker and you have a phone that immediately offers current Blackberry users with an alternative that grays the area that currently exists between the flagship Bold and 3G devices.

What I was most impressed with was the blinding ad impressions potential that was referred to by Jobs if ads are able to be integrated into app use.  A conservative estimate of 500-750k ad impressions per day across all iPhone & iTouch app use put Apple into direct competition with Google for a massive share of global online ad revenue.  Google might not even be able to compete in the same space because apps don’t necessarily run through websites or in webviews exclusively.

Just something to think about….

I've never owned a cell phone let along a 'smart phone' but… The new Iphone is technically not a '4G' phone. AFAIK it's still on the 3G network and they just called it, "Iphone 4".

The new 4G phone on the market is the Android-based HTC EVO.

Android phones have recently begun to outsell Apple iPhone models. Something to also keep in mind if you're watching RIM's competition.
